Reflective essay
When I began my MLS, I did not have a clear idea of what I sought after. I had always enjoyed books and libraries, from pre-K all the way through college. When I began at Southern, I knew little about the details of managing libraries. I simply knew I was passionate about reading and information and wanted to bring that passion into my work.
Through the MLS program, I acquired knowledge and skills to practically apply my interest. I took classes in collection development, programming, public libraries, university libraries, cataloguing, management, research, and technology. I completed an internship at a university/teaching hospital library and in my time there, I was able to provide reference services to patrons and design two LibGuides.
In working to acquire my MLS, I’ve built my ability to ask good questions and know where to find answers. Whether I continue in my current job as a research project manager or I seek out a library-based job, I have increased my marketability and relevant skills though the acquisition of my MLS.
