Course Description:
An examination of the general principles and practices of library management.
Course Objectives:
On completion of the course, you should be able to:
- Describe various approaches to management.
- Apply management activities to the library organization (planning, organizing, staffing, leading/directing, controlling).
- Perform basic cost-finding in a library.
- Create and lead a strong service-oriented library staff.
- Treat staff and library customers in a fair and ethical manner.
- Identify problems and issues in library management and recommend solutions when appropriate.
The learning outcomes specifically support ALA Competencies 5E, 7A, 8A-E (Administration and Management and Lifelong Learning) and the following department MLS core competencies:
- The principles and concepts of planning and managing the effective operations in libraries, including services and programs, human resources, budgets, and public image.
- The concepts behind, issues relating to, and methods for, principled, transformational leadership.
- The necessity of continuing professional development of practitioners in libraries; and the role of the library in the lifelong learning of patrons.
